Test Data Traceability and Closed-Loop Quality
INDIC's test data traceability gives quality and supplier-quality engineers live inspection and test data for every unit they buy. WATS analytics, integrated at the AOI stage as well as at production test, drive a detect, analyse, correct and verify loop. SAP Digital Manufacturing (MES) and SAP S/4HANA (ERP) link each laser-marked unit to its history, and customers can retrieve test logs by serial number.

Test Data Traceability in a Detect, Analyse, Correct, Verify Loop
WATS is usually connected only at the test stage. INDIC also integrates it at automated optical inspection, so AOI and production test results both become live signals that drive a fix at the source.
-
Detect
AOI, ICT, FCT and EOL results stream into live dashboards, so a yield drift or new failure signature appears within the shift.
-
Analyse
Failures are traced by station, component, lot and serial, and the root cause is confirmed before anything changes.
-
Correct
Process, fixture, program or test-limit changes are made under version control, with rollback available.
-
Verify
The fix is proven at the station and on the line by trending first pass yield and PPM, and the verified result becomes the new baseline.
Building Blocks of Test Data Traceability at INDIC
Every INDIC station writes to the same unit record. A unit that hasn't passed doesn't move on and doesn't ship.
-
WATS analytics and live dashboards
WATS is integrated at both the AOI and production test stages. Role-tailored dashboards give managers, technicians and customers a real-time view of yield, failure Paretos, unit flow and a process heat map by station, product, part number and test operation.
-
Automated test in LabVIEW and Python
INDIC test engineers build deterministic test sequences with station health checks, versioned limit files and remote diagnostics.
-
SAP Digital Manufacturing MES checkpoints
ICT, FCT, EOL and on-board programming results, including firmware version and checksum, are tied to each serial number in SAP Digital Manufacturing, INDIC's MES. SAP S/4HANA, INDIC's ERP, holds the matching material and component lot records.
-
Laser marking for unit-level traceability
A permanent laser-marked ID links each unit to its component lots, process steps, operators, equipment and test results.
-
Customer log retrieval by serial number
Test logs are stored by serial number on a permissioned server, so customers can pull unit or lot histories for returns analysis, incoming acceptance or audits.
Measured Results from Test Data Traceability and Closed-Loop Quality
Each result below is documented in a published INDIC case study or reported from INDIC's WATS and AOI integration.
| Result | Program | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000 → 0 PPM | Automotive battery management PCBAs: a flash-programming failure fixed with a software upgrade | BMS flash-failure case study |
| 97.78% test coverage | Four-board smart street-lighting module with no test specs, up from about 50% under the previous outsourced approach | Smart-lighting coverage case study |
| +60% throughput, −20% test cost | EV charger program: programming separated from functional test, with no new equipment | EV charger testing case study |
| +7% first pass yield | Renewable-energy PCBA: random test failures traced to mismatched fixture guide pins | Fixture alignment case study |
| 0 rejects | First batch for a new overseas lighting customer, shipped without an end tester | Lighting customer case study |
| Up to 20% fewer defect escapes | WATS analytics integrated with AOI, also reported with 25–30% less inspection time and up to 35% fewer errors | INDIC WATS integration at the AOI stage (reported) |
What changes when AOI data flows into WATS
A standalone AOI machine only says pass or fail. Connecting it to WATS turns every inspection into traceable, analysable production data.
| Parameter | Standalone AOI | AOI with WATS at INDIC |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Detects defects: pass or fail | Improves manufacturing performance with insights, actions and trends |
| Data storage and context | Machine-level and isolated | Centralised, with serial number, shift, operator, line and station |
| Root cause analysis | Manual investigation | Built-in analytics |
| Time to action | Decisions are delayed | A defect spike is detected and flagged immediately |
| Process loop | Open loop: detection only | Closed loop: detect, analyse, correct, verify |
| Yield | Station-level impact | Factory-level yield optimisation |
| Traceability and compliance | Limited or none | Complete product history |
| Smart factory readiness | Human-dependent, isolated machines | System-driven knowledge base connected to other systems |
INDIC runs CAPA and 8D in six evidenced steps
Every step is recorded in the MES by serial number. See how INDIC runs audits, CAPA and PPM turnarounds.
-
Containment
Lots are quarantined and suspect serial ranges are flagged in the MES.
-
Definition
The failure signature is quantified, and the measurement system is checked first with GR&R/MSA.
-
Root cause
5-Why and Ishikawa analysis, with the failure reproduced on a golden setup.
-
Correction
Fixture, code, DFT or DFM changes, with updated work instructions and limits.
-
Verification
Affected lots are re-run, and the change in first pass yield and PPM is shown at the station.
-
Control
Recipes are locked, layered process audits are added and re-audits are scheduled.
INDIC is audit-ready against six quality standards
| Standard | Scope |
|---|---|
| IATF 16949:2016 | Automotive quality management system |
| ISO 9001:2015 | Quality management system |
| IPC-A-610 | Acceptability of electronic assemblies |
| IPC-9252 and IEEE 1149.1 | Electrical test and boundary-scan expectations |
| ISO/IEC 27001 | Information security for stored and shared test data |
| ANSI/ESD S20.20 | Electrostatic discharge control |
Test data traceability questions
-
What does closed-loop quality mean in electronics manufacturing?
Closed-loop quality means inspection and test data feed straight back into the process. At INDIC, live WATS dashboards linked to AOI and production test detect a problem. The team then analyses the root cause, corrects the process under version control and verifies the fix by trending yield and PPM.
-
What results has INDIC's WATS and AOI integration delivered?
INDIC reports reductions of up to 20% in defect escapes, 25–30% in inspection time and up to 35% in errors after integrating WATS test-data analytics at the automated optical inspection stage, where WATS is less commonly used than at final test. The INDIC quality team can walk customers through the dashboards behind these figures.
-
Can customers access test data for their own units?
Yes. INDIC stores test logs by serial number on a permissioned server. Customers can retrieve a unit's or lot's history for returns analysis, incoming acceptance or audits.
-
How does test data traceability work at INDIC?
Each unit carries a laser-marked ID that SAP Digital Manufacturing, INDIC's MES, links to its component lots, process steps, firmware version and checksum, and every ICT, FCT and EOL result. MES checkpoints stop a unit from moving on until it has passed.
-
Which MES, ERP and test-data systems does INDIC use?
INDIC runs SAP Digital Manufacturing as its MES for production and SAP S/4HANA as its ERP. WATS collects and analyses AOI and test data. Together they link every serial number to its lots, process steps, firmware and results, for all customers.
-
What test automation does INDIC use?
INDIC test engineers build automated production test in LabVIEW and Python. The sequences are deterministic, with station health checks, versioned limit files with rollback, and remote diagnostics.
-
How does INDIC handle a quality escape or customer complaint?
INDIC follows a structured CAPA/8D process: containment, problem definition, root cause, corrective action, verification and a control plan. Every step is evidenced in the MES by serial number.
